Restrictions when screw pumps handle dusty gases

In general, screw pumps are not suitable for pumping gases with particles, but it can pumping  with particles less than 0.15 mm in diameter after adding a filter in the exhaust port of piston vacuum pump, which must be replaced and cleaned regularly.

When a screw pump is used with a Roots pump for vacuum furnace, the Roots pump will leak oil after a period of time due to aging damage to the shaft seal, and the oil and the soft felt used in the vacuum furnace and other substances mixed to form soft particles are pumped into the cavity of the screw pump, thus causing damage to the screw pump.

The solution is to add a filter to the air inlet of the Roots pump and to replace the aging oil seal in time.
