Overview of chlorine use:

The principle of disinfection is that it reacts with water to generate hypochlorite. Its strong oxidation performance kills bacteria in water. The reason why hypochlorite is not directly used for disinfection of tap water is that hypochlorite is easy to decompose and difficult to preserve, with high cost and high toxicity. Chlorine disinfection can make the dissolution, decomposition and synthesis of hypochlorite in water reach a balance, with appropriate concentration and less residual toxicity in water.)

② Preparation of hydrochloric acid

③ It is used in industry to make bleaching powder or bleaching powder concentrate.

In this application, chlorine is recovered and compressed. Chlorine is lethal, toxic and extremely corrosive, so special consideration should be given to compressor materials, sealing fluid and system configuration. Low pressure chlorine applications using high concentration sulfuric acid can be treated with standard ductile iron compressors.

In the case of low working temperature and sulfuric acid as sealing fluid, there is almost no risk of corrosion in iron, so it makes cast iron more cost-effective than Hastelloy. Instead, in high-pressure applications, compressor casings made of austenitic stainless steel (316L or hc276 for some applications) are required, with auxiliary equipment attached to the steel to accommodate the appropriate corrosion allowance.
